The launch of the new Direct Debit Index for charities couldn’t be more timely. As charities face growing pressure on recurring income, the need to better understand, benchmark and optimise Direct Debit performance has never been greater.

Direct debit and direct mail

Recent findings from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) highlight the scale of the challenge—but also the opportunity. Total donations have fallen from £15.4bn in 2024 to £14bn in 2025, while participation in giving has declined from 69% of the population in 2016 to 55% today. Average monthly donations have also dipped, from £72 to £65, reflecting ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

But this isn’t simply a story of decline—it’s one of changing behaviour. CAF data shows that 78% of donors are still motivated by emotional connection to causes, and 53% want to feel part of something bigger. Importantly, Direct Debit remains one of the most popular ways to give, accounting for around a fifth of all donations.

This is where the partnership between Direct Debit and direct mail becomes critical.

Direct Debit provides the long-term value—predictable, reliable income that charities depend on. Direct mail, meanwhile, plays a vital role in making that commitment happen in the first place. As a tangible, trusted and highly personal channel, it is uniquely effective at building emotional engagement and prompting action.

When used together, the results are powerful. Direct mail can drive initial sign-ups through compelling storytelling and clear calls to action, while also reinforcing the decision to give regularly. It helps donors feel confident, connected and valued—key factors in converting one-off support into long-term commitment.

Beyond acquisition, direct mail is equally important in maintaining and growing Direct Debit relationships. Regular, personalised communications can reduce attrition, encourage upgrades and remind donors of the real-world impact of their contributions.
