The latest IPA Bellwether Report, out last week, reveals a huge surge in direct marketing which achieved the strongest budget revisions in over 20 years.

The Power of Direct Marketing in Difficult Times
In an era where digital often overshadows traditional marketing methods such as direct mail, this resurgence is particularly noteworthy. The report suggests that this symbolises a strategic shift as organisations navigate through the challenging economic environment. Tangible personalised channels such as direct mail are proven to be more effective at building genuine connections with audiences in times of economic stress than other channels.
For charities this efficacy is crucial at a time when the cost of living crisis continues to impact donations. It is therefore unsurprising that direct marketing achieved a net balance of +12.6% up from +4.3% since the opening quarter of 2005. This clearly underscores its growing relevance in today’s marketing landscape.
In general, the report was favourable for all channels (only market research experienced a drop in investment). Over a quarter (26.0%) of marketers experienced a rise in their total marketing budgets in the fourth quarter of 2023, a stark contrast to the 11.3% who faced cuts.
The Outlook for 2024 and Beyond
Looking ahead, the Report also paints an optimistic picture for direct marketing. Organisations, including charities, said they are gearing up for a strong year, with a focus on events and direct marketing. The projections for 2024/25 show a net balance of +17.8% for events and +16.8% for direct marketing, indicating that these areas will be pivotal in marketing strategies.
With Royal Mail’s continued direct mail incentives which you can read about here https://www.productionhub.org.uk/new-year-new-mail-incentives/ now is a good time to invest in direct mail marketing.
