According to the latest World Giving Index 2022 compiled by CAF, the UK is the 17th most generous country in the world, rising five places since last year.

Indonesia was found to be the most generous country, followed by Kenya, USA, Australia and New Zealand, respectively. The Ukraine was the only European country to make the Top 10.

The report found that globally, more people donated money to charity than in any year of the previous decade. Around 200 million more people made a financial donation, with the value of donations rising by 10 per cent in high-income economies. The UK is now the fifth most generous country when it comes to donating money with 65 per cent of people saying they had made a financial gift to the third sector in the last 30 days.

Helping a stranger remained the most widespread giving behaviour and reached record levels. Three billion people helped someone they didn’t know, increasing by approximately half a billion compared to prior to the pandemic. Volunteering also increased with a quarter of adults saying they had volunteered in some capacity. This was more prevalent in lower income countries. The United States is the only high-income country to occupy a place in the top 10.

The report clearly shows that giving takes different forms around the world. For instance, people in the UK are more likely to donate money rather than their time. However, as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, it remains to be seen whether the needle will shift more towards volunteering. If this is the case charities that can demonstrate to their supporters exactly how they can get involved through volunteering will be a strong position. Direct mail is proven to be an effective way to communicate complex information such as this as people spend more time reading their mail than they do reading other forms of communications including email and social media.
