Direct mail continues to demonstrate its value as a measurable and effective marketing channel, with research from JICMAIL revealing significant improvements in campaign response rates.

The 2026 JICMAIL Response Rate Tracker, drawing on data from nearly 5,000 campaigns, found that response rates for both warm and cold retail direct mail increased substantially.
Warm direct mail response rates rose by 26%, while cold direct mail recorded an impressive 21% increase.
The research also highlights the commercial value of reaching existing customers. Warm direct mail generated an average return on investment of £11.50 for every £1 spent, demonstrating the potential of well-targeted campaigns to deliver measurable results.
Interestingly, format also matters. JICMAIL found that A4 mailers achieved approximately 2.7 times the response rate of postcards, reinforcing the importance of choosing the right creative approach for each campaign.
For organisations investing in direct mail, the findings offer several practical lessons.
Accurate data, relevant messaging and thoughtful creative execution all contribute to campaign effectiveness. For charities in particular, understanding audience preferences and developing meaningful communications can help strengthen supporter engagement and encourage donations.
The research also reinforces the value of testing different formats, refining targeting and measuring outcomes to improve future campaigns.
